Water ionizer is a device that ionizes water . Despite the lack of empirical evidence supporting the health benefits of ionized water, water ionizers are sold as antioxidants that slow down the aging process and prevent disease [1] . Such statements contradict the laws of chemistry and physiology [2] .
Ionization Process
During electrolysis under the influence of electric current, water is oxidized at the anode , producing oxygen (O 2 ), and is reduced at the cathode , forming hydrogen (H 2 ). [3]
Use of ionized water
There is no empirical evidence supporting the claims of ionizer manufacturers about the significant effect of ionized water on the human body [4] Due to the acid-base balance, drinking ionized water should not change the acidity of the body [1] .
Electrolyzed water was used in the food industry to disinfect food; electrolyzed water was effective against bacteria, but not for disinfection of dishes and food [5] [6] .
