Biography

Until 1968, he studied history and classical philology at the University of Budapest . He continued his studies in Germany at the University of Heidelberg. Ruprecht and Karl (1987-1988).

In 1990 he became a doctor of historical sciences, in 1996 - a doctor of philosophy. In 1994-2001 he taught at the Faculty of Medieval and Contemporary History of Hungary at the University of Budapest .

In 1995 and in 1997 - a researcher at the University of Vienna . He speaks German, Latin, Italian and antique Greek. Married, has two children.

Socialist. In 1989, he was one of the founders of the Hungarian Socialist Party . In 2002-2004 - Deputy Chairman of the VSP, from October 16, 2004 to February 24, 2007 - Chairman of the Socialist Party.

In April 2002, he was first elected to the Hungarian National Assembly , and was re-elected in the 2006 elections.

From May 2002 to May 2003 he worked as Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education. From May 2003 to February 2005 - Minister of Culture in the offices of the Prime Ministers Peter Medieshi and Ferenc Gyurcsany .

June 9, 2006 appointed Minister of Education and Culture of Hungary in the government of Ferenc Gyurcsany . He retained this post in the next government of Gordon Bainai in May 2010.
