Luis Gonzaga do Nascimento ( December 13, 1912 , Eschu , Pernambuco - August 2, 1989 , Recife ) - Brazilian singer, musician and poet, one of the largest figures in Brazilian folk music of the XX century [4] . He sang songs, accompanying himself on the accordion , zambumba drum and triangle . His songs were directly related to the cultural traditions of the Brazilian arid northeastern outskirts, the so-called sertan , and their content often related to the poverty and grief of the people living there [5] . Many of his songs belong to the Bayan genre (sometimes he is even called the founder of this direction [6] ), as well as shot and shashado . Many Brazilian critics considered him a music innovator, inventor of complex melodies [7] .

Biography
Born in the family of a peasant and musician, was the second son in the family; I became interested in playing the accordion as a child, having received the first lessons from my father, and together with him acted as a musician at village fairs and festivals. After being demobilized from the army in 1939, he settled in Rio de Janeiro , where he was originally a musician and singer on the streets and in bars, while performing mostly foreign songs and was dressed in traditional clothes - a jacket and tie. Since 1941, he began to perform in the national costume of the inhabitants of the Brazilian northeast, which made him more popular; in the same year he signed a contract with Victor , with which he recorded 50 of his own compositions, and in 1945 his first song was recorded at the same studio. In the same year, he had a short affair with a girl named Leah, who a year later gave birth to a son from him, and in 1948 died of tuberculosis. Two years earlier, he married his former secretary Helena, who, however, refused to accept his son [8] .
In the late 1940s and 1950s, Gonzaga, despite family problems, actively performed was very popular, but in the 1960s his fame in cities whose population began to prefer other musical genres (in particular, bossa nova ) , began to fade, but in the countryside he was still loved by the public and often went there on tour; while periodically the records with his songs continued to be released. In the 1970s and 1980s, his name was again often mentioned in the press, primarily due to cover versions of his songs performed by various stars of the Brazilian stage. In the last years of his life he suffered from osteoporosis , died of a heart attack. In Brazil, a hydroelectric power station [9] and a dam [10] are named in Brazil.
