Department of Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification

Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department ( 防疫 給水 部 bo: eki kyu: sui bu ) , also known as Special Research Squads, is the formation of the Imperial Army of Japan , formed in 1936 and dissolved in 1945, which was responsible for maintaining sanitary standards in the Imperial Army, and secret research in the fields of chemical and biological weapons [1] . The formations of this department ( detachments ) were involved in a number of experiments on people , ranging from artificial infection of diseases to the test of biological weapons on prisoners. The accusations of the experiments were confirmed in 1996 in the book “Troops of the bacteriological warfare” ( 細菌 戦 部隊 saikin ikusa tay ) [2] .

Structure

The department included the following units:

  • control.
  • Detachment 100 (as part of the Kwantung Army ). The base is Menjiatun , 10 km south of Xinjing . He studied the causative agents of infectious diseases and the possibility of destroying the cavalry of the Chinese and red armies .
  • "Detachment 691" is the conditional and collective name of several special detachments.
    • Detachment 731 (as part of the Kwantung Army ). Base - Pinfang (now Harbin district). The most famous detachment engaged in extensive research in chemistry and biology. The commander is Shiro Ishii . He put experiments on people in order to study the processes of various diseases. The number of victims is estimated from 3 to 10 thousand people.
      • Detachment 516 (as part of the Kwantung Army ). Base - Qiqihar . He was engaged in research in the field of chemical weapons. As a result of experiments, a huge part of China was exposed to chemical contamination.
      • Other units actually involved in water treatment as a cover for the department: units 162, 319, 543, 643 and 673.
  • Detachment 1855 (as part of the North China Front ). Base is Beijing .
  • Detachment 1644 (as part of the Central China Front ). Base - Nanjing . Known for experiments on people, during which prisoners were infected artificially with cholera, typhoid, bubonic plague, etc. Documents on the activities of the detachment have not yet been made public.
  • Detachment 8604 (as part of the South China Front , known as Detachment Nami). Base - Guangzhou . Known for numerous experiments on people, as well as torture of prisoners. The commander is Suji Sato .
  • Detachment 9420 (as part of the Southern Expeditionary Group of armies , known as Detachment "Oka"). Base - Singapore . The largest special research unit of the Japanese army, located outside of China.

Equipment

Each detachment and unit of the department had water purification equipment, a huge number of vehicles for delivering water to the troops and secret equipment for experiments, personally selected by Shiro Ishii [3] .
