Career
He first attracted attention by winning a bronze medal at the national championship in 1940. However, he did not have any special achievements for the next eight years. The situation changed when the athlete became the third at the Summer Olympic Games in London (1948) in 10,000 m competitions.
After this success, he moved from the Balmy Beach Canoe Club (Toronto) to the Rideau Canoe Club (Ottawa) and won the national championship (1950). At the Olympic Games in Helsinki (1952) he became fifth at a distance of 10,000 m. His brother Kenneth Lane became the silver medalist in the doubles competition at these Games.
By then, he had already earned a Ph.D. in mathematics, but continued his active rowing career until the end of the decade, returning to Toronto. He completed his performances, failing to qualify for the 1960 Summer Games in Rome.
After sports, he worked for a long time as a professor of mathematics at McMaster University (1952-1987).
