Biography

Mikhail Tolmachev was born on September 5, 1909 in the village of Staroklyonovskoye (now Pervomaisky district of the Tambov region ). After graduating from five grades of school, he lived and worked in Ivanteevka . In 1941, Tolmachev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. From the same year - on the fronts of World War II [1] .

By July 1944, guard sergeant Mikhail Tolmachev was a gunner of the 40th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 11th Guards Rifle Division of the 11th Guards Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the battles in the territory of the Lithuanian SSR during the Belarusian offensive operation [2] [3] . On July 13, 1944, Tolmachev was among the first to cross the Neman in the region of the village of Raduchi south of the city of Alytus and conducted reconnaissance of the German defense, which allowed the regiment to cross without losses [2] . July 15, 1944 Tolmachev actively participated in repelling the twelve German counterattacks. On October 28, 1944, in a battle near the city of Gross-Trakenen, he was seriously wounded and died the next day. He was buried in the city of Marijampole in Lithuania [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the "exemplary execution of the combat missions of command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown" of the guard, senior sergeant Mikhail Tolmachev was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and a number of medals [1] .

In honor of Tolmachev, a street was named in Ivanteevka, a monument was erected in Marijampole [1] .
