Rhododendron 'Mauritz' is a variety of evergreen rhododendrons of hybrid origin.

Obtained in Mustila arboretum by crossing Rhododendron brachycarpum subsp. tigerstedtii with a red-flowered creeping ground hybrid Rh. forrestii var. repens . By crossing the same plants, the variety 'Elviira' was also obtained [2] .
The crossing was carried out in the framework of the program for breeding rhododendrons of the University of Helsinki in collaboration with the Mustila arboretum (1973 - 2000). The program used rhododendrons growing in the Helsinki Arboretum since 1930. By 1973, the most winter-hardy survived from these plants. Initially, 53 pollinated plants and 23 species and 48 hybrids were used in the breeding program as pollinators. Of the first 22,000 hybrid seedlings received, 14,000 were selected. As a result of the harsh winters of the 1980s, 9,000 out of 14,000 seedlings survived. Among the survivors, there were many plants that were completely undamaged during the winter. Of these, 80 seedlings were selected, which were propagated by microclonal propagation . Some varieties were subsequently registered [3]

Biological Description
At the age of 10 years, the height is about 80 cm [1] , according to another source a little less than 200 cm [2] .
The crown is dense. The variety has good branching.
Leaves are bare, dark green, heavily textured.
The flowers are cherry red, slightly lighter than the brick red flowers of the variety 'Elviira'.
In Finland, blooms in mid-May [2] [1] .
In Culture
Probably withstands temperature drops to -30 ° C. Needs complete protection from the spring sun [1] .
In terms of choosing a landing site, 'Mauritz' is less whimsical than 'Elviira' [2] .
