In addition, he was the first to make descriptions of the Neanderthals and the Pithecanthropus later recognized as classical, declaring the Neanderthals a special kind of fossil man. He was the author of a treatise on the recently discovered (at that time) Javanese man who received great scientific attention. Since 1899, he directed the publication of the scientific journal Zeitschrift fΓΌr Morphologie und Anthropologie.
