Biography
He was raised by the Mennonites . Baptized in 1646. In 1648, he read his poem in honor of laying the first stone of the new building of the city hall, for which he was awarded a laurel wreath and a silver crown. In 1649 he went to Italy, in November 1651 he arrived in Rome and there in December converted to Catholicism . In Rome, he became Secretary of Cardinal Luigi Capponi and continued to write poetry, for which he received a gold medal from Pope Innocent X. In 1655, he was introduced to Queen Christine of Sweden , to whom she dedicated the poem “De Zweedsche Pallas”, receiving a gold chain from the Queen.
The best of his poetic works, collected and published by Gaas in 1713: “The Martyrdom of St. Stefan ”,“ The Plague in Naples ”and the tragedy“ Parisian Bloody Wedding ”.
