The 20th North Carolina Infantry Regiment was one of the infantry regiments of the Confederate Army during the US Civil War . The regiment participated in almost all battles of the North Virginia army from the Seven-Day Battle to the surrender at Appomattox .

Formation
The regiment was formed in July 1861 in Smithfield and Fort Cavell, North Carolina . His companies were recruited in the districts of Brunswick , Columbus , Cabarras , Daplin and Sampson. The first commander of the regiment was Alfred Iverson, lieutenant colonel - Frank Fayson. The regiment consisted of ten companies [1] :

Battle Path
First, the regiment was sent for garrison service on the coast of North Carolina, and in June it was transferred to Richmond, included in the Samuel Garland brigade (as part of the D. Hill division ) and a few days later took part in the battle of Seven Pines .
The regiment participated in the Seven Day Battle and in the Maryland Campaign . In the battle in the South Mountains, the regiment performed well, successfully attacking the enemy’s artillery battery [2] .
General Garland was mortally wounded in a battle in the Southern Mountains , and Duncan MacRae took command, and under his leadership the brigade participated in the battle of Entity . September 17 at 10:00 on was sent to the left flank of the army, but fell under a flank attack and retreated in panic. MacRae wrote that Iverson was able to put his regiment in order, and he eventually brought some benefit [2] . In total, during the Maryland Campaign, the 20th North Carolinsky lost 11 people killed and 30 wounded.
On November 1, Iverson was promoted to brigadier general and took command of the brigade.
Iverson’s brigade was not involved in the battle of Fredericksburg and the regiment lost only 3 people.
On February 26, 1863, Colonel Thomas Thun took command of the regiment.
During the Gettysburg campaign, the 20th Severokarolinsky was a member of the Iverson brigade, which was part of the Robert Rhodes division from the first corps of the North Virginia Army. During the battle of Gettysburg, the brigade participated in the morning attack of the Rhodes division, but fell under the flank attack of the federal brigade of Henry Baxter . The most severe losses were suffered by the advancing extremely left 5th North Carolina Regiment , the 20th Severokarolinsky marched to the right of the 5th and was also badly damaged. 372 people were in the regiment at the beginning of the battle, almost two thirds of them were lost. In the following days of the battle, the regiment was no longer brought into battle.
