History
Cristal was first created in 1876 for the Emperor of Russia Alexander II and is considered by many as the first prestigious cuvée ( fr. Prestige cuvée ) [1] . The political situation in Russia at that time was unstable, so the tsar was afraid of assassination attempts. He ordered that the champagne bottles for his Three Emperors Dinner banquet be made transparent so that the emperor could see the bubbles, as well as to prevent the possibility of hiding the bomb in them, as was the case with a regular dark green bottle [2] . Louis Roederer asked the Flemish glass manufacturer to create a bottle of champagne with a flat bottom made of transparent lead glass . Champagne gained fame as "Cristal" [3] .
Until 1945, wine was not sold [4] . In the mid-1990s and early 2000s, the brand became associated with rap and hip-hop culture. The drink became part of the image of some artists, “ Crissy ” was mentioned in the lyrics, for example, Raekwon , 50 Cent , Big Karlage , Biggie Smalls , Puff Daddy , Big L , Hollywood Undead , Yung Lean and Jay-Z [5] [6] . The character of Quentin Tarantino in the film " Four Rooms ", called him the best champagne in the world. Tupac Shakur created a cocktail called Thug Passion , a blend of and Cristal. In 2006, the managing director of Louis Roederer, Frederic Ruzo, was mentioned in The Economist magazine in the "Popular Brands" section along with hip-hop artists [7] . His comments were perceived by rappers as negative, and Jay-Z began a boycott of the brand [8] .
Production
The first issue of the red Cristal was the 1974 vintage [4] . Composition: approximately equal combination of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir . Vintage 2000 contains 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay with a dosage of 10 g / l. The annual production of champagne is from 300,000 to 400,000 bottles, and its cost is from 200 to 1,500 dollars, depending on the year of harvest and the type of wine [9] .
