Mikhail Turgel was born on December 5, 1909 in the city of Novomirgorod (now the Kirovograd region of Ukraine ). In 1937, he graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Water Transport Engineers , after which he worked as a senior engineer at one of the Leningrad factories. In 1942, Turgel was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since January 1943 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .

By September 1943, the Guard, Senior Lieutenant Mikhail Turgel, was a senior adjutant of the 2nd Rifle Battalion of the 78th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 25th Guards Rifle Division of the 6th Army of the Southwestern Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On the night of September 25-26, 1943, the Turgel, as part of the advance detachment, crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Voiskovoye, Solonyansky District, Dnipropetrovsk Region, Ukrainian SSR . At the critical moment of the battle, he replaced the out-of-command unit commander and repulsed fierce German counterattacks for one and a half days, holding out until the main forces crossed. In those battles, Turgel was shell-shocked, but continued to fight [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 19, 1944, for “exemplary fulfillment of the command assignments and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Senior Lieutenant Mikhail Turgel was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 2259 [ 1] .

In the post-war period, Turgel served in the organs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR. In 1954, with the rank of major, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Leningrad . He died on March 19, 1975, was buried at the Krasnenky cemetery in St. Petersburg [1] .

He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, the Order of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
