Australian meat pie is a small (hand-sized) meat pie, the filling for which, as a rule, serves finely chopped meat or minced, seasoned with sauce; Other ingredients may include onions, mushrooms and cheese.
The dish is considered to be national in Australia and New Zealand [1] - in particular, former Prime Minister of the State of New South Wales Bob Carr [2] responded about it in 2003. Newspaper The Guardian dish is also called the "greatest" in Australian cuisine [3] . In New Zealand, the cake is considered an integral dish of national cuisine [4] . The Australian company Four'N'Twenty makes 50000 such pies per hour; It is estimated that the average Australian eats 12 meat pies a year [5] .
Australian meat pie is a popular snack of Australian football fans [5] . In Australia since 1990 [6] , and in New Zealand since 1997 [7] , annual competitions are held to determine the best producer of meat pies.
Australian culinary specialist Robert McLean has written a book about the history of Australian meat pie [8] . According to the Australian culinary historian Janet Clarkson, this dish has been known in Europe since the Middle Ages and is considered in modern Australia as a national dish by accidental combination of circumstances [9] .
