Biography
Born in Chicago in the family of real estate investor David Dool, who died when she was nine, [1] and his wife, Margo Hyman, a Jewish Jew who [2] immigrated to the United States from Nazi Germany in 1937. In 1962, Lansing graduated from the University of Chicago , and in 1966 received a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University . [3]
At the end of the decade, Lansing decided to try herself as an actress, making her debut in 1968 on television. In 1970, two films were released immediately with her participation - “To Love” (1970) and “Rio Lobo” (1970), which became her only film works. Disappointed in her acting career, she decided to approach the film business from a different perspective, working as a script editor at MGM Studios. Over the years, she began to occupy increasingly high posts in Hollywood studios, working after MGM at Columbia Pictures , and in 1980 she became the first woman to run 20th Century Fox . Together with producer Stanley R. Jaffi Lansing was the co-director of Jaffe / Lansing Productions, the most famous film of which was the psychological thriller Fatal Attraction , which earned them an Oscar nomination for the best motion picture in 1987. [four]
In 1992, Lansing switched to Paramount Pictures , marking the beginning of a long and successful series of studio hits. [4] Under her leadership, the studio released such blockbusters as Forrest Gump (1994), Braveheart (1995) and Titanic (1997). [4] [5] [6] [7] Overall, 80% of all films released at the studio during her Lansing leadership were box office success. In 1996, the Lansing star was laid on the Hollywood Walk of Fame , and in 2001 Ladies' Home Journal put it on America’s 30 most influential women list. [8] In 2004, after Viacom media conglomerate, which owns Paramount Pictures, decided to split the studio into two parts, Lansing resigned.
Subsequent years, she was active in various fields of society. Lansing met on the governing boards of the American Red Cross , [9] Carter Center, Qualcomm , and a number of other charitable, scientific, and medical associations. In 2005, she set up a cancer research foundation with her own name. [4] [7] [10] In 2007, Lansing was awarded the Gene Hersholt Academy Award for her work in the field of cancer research. [9]
Since 1991, Lansing has been married to director William Fridkin .
