Biography
She was born in Chicago , and in 1906 she moved to New York , where, planning to become an illustrator, she entered the Student Art League. There she began to take part in local theatrical productions, and with time completely immersed herself in theatrical creativity. In 1912, Kennedy made her debut on Broadway , where over the next few years she gained popularity and recognition from critics. In 1917, the actress signed a contract with the studio " Goldwyn Pictures ", and for several years left the stage, appearing in a number of films, including "The Blooming Angel" (1920) and "Pravda" (1920). Her successful film career lasted until the late 1920s, after which Kennedy returned to Broadway.
In 1927, the first husband of the actress, Harold Bolster, an employee of a large financial institution in New York, died. After his death, Kennedy inherited his entire fortune to $ 500,000. In 1934, she married actor and radio host William B. Henley Jr. for the second time, after which she moved away from an acting career for almost two decades.
In 1952, Kennedy returned to movie screens, becoming in the following years actively to act in films and on television. Among the films of those years with her participation are such pictures as “Save the marriage” (1952), “ Wedding breakfast ” (1956), “ Thirst for life ” (1956), “ Floating house ” (1958), “ To the north through the north-west ” (1959) and “ They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969). On television, she had regular roles in the TV shows Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Leave It to Beaver. In 1965, after a 33-year hiatus, Madge Kennedy returned to Broadway in the play “Very Rich Woman”, where her colleague was Ruth Gordon , with whom she had long-standing friendly relations. Kennedy's acting career lasted until 1976, when the last movie came out with her participation - the thriller “ Marathoner ”, where the actress appeared in one of the episodes.
The last years of her life Madge Kennedy spent in the California city of Woodland Hills , where she died of respiratory failure in 1987 at the age of 96 years. Her contribution to the US film industry is marked by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
