He painted mainly historical paintings and portraits. He is the author of a number of articles on art, photography, pedagogy, and museum organization.

Origin

Born on January 5, 1866 in Kostroma.
Father - Karelin, Andrey Osipovich , a famous Russian artist and photographer of the late XIX century.
Mother - Eugene Nikitichna Karelina (nee Makarenko), the first wife of A.O. Karelin, died during childbirth.
Brothers and sisters. The elders are Lyudmila (1862–?) And Apollo (1863–1926). The younger ones ( consolidated ) are Olga (1869-1949), Tatyana (1877-1927) and Raphael (1885-1942).

Biography

From an early age he lived in Nizhny Novgorod , was raised by the second wife of A.O. Karelin - Olga Grigoryevna Karelina (Lermontova). In childhood, he often posed for his father for photo portraits of the 1870s (a boy with curly hair, dressed in a Russian shirt and boots ).

He studied painting with his father, photographer Andrei Osipovich Karelin [2] , then at the Academy of Arts (in 1883-1885) with K. E. Makovsky .

In 1892, he received the title of Honorary Free Associate of the Academy of Arts for the painting "Overseas Fool."

He worked on orders from the Ministry of the Imperial Court . He painted paintings on historical and religious themes, portraits, icons. He took part in painting the pavilion of the Nizhny Novgorod All-Russian Exhibition in 1896 , in creating the interior decoration of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in St. Petersburg , the church of Alexander Nevsky and the church of the Life Guards of the Ulan Regiment in Warsaw (1907), for the Church of the Resurrection of Christ he executed cardboards for 10 mosaics of the Proverb’s interior about poor Lazarus after death ”and 9 mosaics of saints, martyrs, apostles and reverends on pilasters.

A. A. Karelin was one of the organizers of the City Art and History Museum in Nizhny Novgorod.

In 1896-1900 he was chairman of the Society of Historical Artists .

The Hermitage houses a portrait of Metropolitan Anthony painted by Karelin in 1911.

On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov’s house, A. A. Karelin creates a 10-meter canvas depicting the accession of Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov, for which he receives personal nobility from Nicholas II [3] .

The last years of his life (1925-1926) he spent in the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic ( Turkmenistan ), where he created and headed the art department of the Turkmen State Museum, to which he presented his personal collection - more than 300 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, decorative and applied art. [4] . He worked as the main artist of Turkzdat ( Ashgabat ), became the architect of a unique monument to Lenin in Ashgabat (sculptor E.R. Tripolskaya ). [5] In the course of work on the monument, Karelin, together with the ceramist N.I. Nazarov , revived the production of traditional Asian majolica . [6] He was the author of the drawing, on the basis of which the emblem of the Turkmen SSR was approved in October 1926. [five]

He died in Ashgabat in 1928. Currently, the place of his burial is unknown.

Proceedings

Karelin’s works are in the storerooms of the Turkmen State Museum, the Hermitage , the Dnipropetrovsk and Nizhny Novgorod art museums. [5] . The fate of many significant works commissioned by the Imperial Court has not yet been clarified [3] .
