The Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks are American professional basketball teams that represent the NBA East Conference . The games have been held among themselves in the framework of the championship since 1976. Historically, the confrontation between the two teams is more geographic than rival in essence. The Knicks is played at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan in one of New York 's boroughs . β€œNets” played in the suburbs of New York Long Island and in the state of New Jersey , and since 2012 they have been performing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in another borough in New York. Teams met in the playoffs only three times in the first round.

After the Nets moved to Brooklyn, there was an increase in the intensity of rivalry, which caused a war of words between the two franchises. Since the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets arenas are located in New York Borough Manhattan and Brooklyn, respectively, the media dubbed this rivalry the Battle of Borough [1] or the Clash of Borough [2] [3] .

History

Beginning (1967-1977)

The relationship between Nyx and Nets has been antagonistic to each other since the creation of the Nets franchise. The Nets were originally created in 1967 as a founding member of the ABA and were called New York Americans. The league planned for the team to play in the . β€œNyx” forced the warehouse of the 69th regiment to refuse β€œNets” in the room 3 months before the start of the ABA. The latter later settled at in Tinek , New Jersey . The team moved and changed its name to New Jersey Americans [4] .

Before the merger of the ABA with the NBA, the New York Knicks and New York Nets held six exhibition matches. If in the first two fights the Nyx basketball players were stronger, then the Nets players won the final sixth game [5] .

The New York Nets was one of four ABA teams that joined the NBA as a result of the in 1976. The Nets, who played at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum , were punished with a $ 4.8 million fine for β€œinfringing” New York Knicks territory. The β€œinfringement” fee in favor of the Knicks and the fee for joining the NBA made it impossible for the current ABA champions to save their star Julius Irving . To fulfill its financial obligations, the New York Nets was forced to sell Irving to Philadelphia 76 [6] .

When the Nets decided to go back to New Jersey in 1977, the Nix again threatened to block the move because it would violate their exclusive territorial rights in New Jersey. The Nets replied that they would be suing the New York Knicks on the grounds that their actions violate antitrust laws. The dispute between the clubs was settled after NBA intervention, the Nets agreed to pay $ 4 million to the Knicks for the right to relocate [6] .

New York vs New Jersey (1977-2012)

Between 1977 and 2012, the Nets were played in New Jersey under the name New Jersey Nets. During this time, the Knicks generally received more media coverage regardless of team statistics, despite the fact that both franchises were thought to be playing in the New York market. When the New York Knicks came to New Jersey to play with the Nets, the arena was often evenly distributed among club fans. This was partly due to the fact that the two teams were separated only by the Hudson River , but the contributing factor was that tickets in New Jersey were relatively cheaper than in Madison Square Garden . The atmosphere was often tense among the "implacable" fans of the teams trying to establish control of the "advantages of their site."

In their history of confrontations, the New Jersey Nets and Knicks exchanged dominance in the New York area. The main successes of the New York Knicks were in the late 1970s and from the late 1980s to the end of the 1990s. The Nets were stronger in the early 1980s and 2000s. The teams met twice in the first round of the playoffs of 1983 and 1994 . In both cases, the Knicks were stronger.

The rivalry began to heat up in the early 2000s. With the exchange of Stephen Marbury at the Phoenix Suns for Jason Kidd , the New Jersey Nets became a higher class at Eastern Conferences in 2001 . Due to the long-noted media disparity between New York and New Jersey clubs, after signing, Kidd said the Nets would try to turn the tide with the Knicks. (At the time of the interview, the New York Knicks won 68 matches with the Nets and lost 60 meetings to them) [7] .

The rivalry once again turned up a notch when New York-born Stephon Marbury, once a harshly criticized New Jersey point guard , exchanged for Jason Kidd, became a New York Knicks player through an exchange. Jason and Stephen had their own confrontation: Kidd, who is reputedly the best point guard of the league, and Marbury, who claims to be the best point guard of the league. [8] [9] The two stars that had once been exchanged for each other now found each other on opposite sides of intense rivalry, and their respective teams were motivated to prove their superiority in great New York . Some Knicks players have gone so far as to say that they wanted to face the New Jersey Nets (reigning two-time Eastern Conference champion at the time) in the playoffs. The Nets were demolished in the first round of the 2004 Knicks playoffs. The series included a media skirmish between players from the New York Knicks and Kenyon Martin from the New Jersey Nets. Thomas almost challenged Martin for a duel and called him β€œ fugazi ” [10] [11] .

New York v. Brooklyn (2012 -present )

From the late 2000s to the present, the New York Knicks have more often defeated the Nets. Since the purchase of the New Jersey Nets in 2010, Mikhail Prokhorov has begun to pounce on the New York Knicks and its owners. He stated that he wanted to turn Nyx fans into Nets fans when the team moved [12] . In the summer of 2010, Mikhail Prokhorov bought a billboard displaying it and the then co-owner of the Nets Jay-Z with the words β€œGreatness Project”, opposite the Nyx home arena Madison Square Garden [13] . The New York Knicks responded to the New Jersey Nets marketing campaign with an ad that said: You can walk like a cape, you can talk like us, but you're never going to be like us. This prompted Prokhorov to say that the Nets would like to be like the Lakers [14] . Mikhail Prokhorov was happy that the New Jersey Nets forced the New York Knicks to overpay for Carmelo Anthony (by increasing his proposal for Anthony) [15] .

In November 2012 at the time, Brooklyn President Borough Marty Markowitz mockingly called the Knicks β€œManhattan Knicks” and stated that any Brooklyn resident New York Knicks is a traitor [16] .

Disrespect between the two clubs, including personal insults (Mikhail Prokhorov called the owner of the New York Knicks β€œThis little man”) [17] , reached the point that NBA commissioner David Stern felt the need organize a meeting between the owners of the Nets and the Knicks in order to reduce the tension between them [18] .

On September 25, 2013, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that the 2015 NBA Star weekend will be held in New York. The home of the New York Knicks Madison Square Garden will host the 2015 NBA All-Star Game. The NBA Rising Stars match and star weekend contests will be held at the Brooklyn Nets club’s home arena, Barclays Center [19] .

Prior to the 2017/2018 season, the Brooklyn Nets won six of seven matches at the Barclays Center against the New York Knicks [20] .

Before the opening of the free agent market in the summer of 2019, it was reported that the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks would fight to bring Kairi Irving and Kevin Durant into their squad [21] [22] . Both players became Brooklyn basketball players in July 2019 [23] [24] .
