Joannes (Johan) Engelsma ( Netherlands. Club career

Johan Engelsma began his football career at the Ajax Amsterdam, where he played for the first time at the age of 17 and 78 days. He made his debut on April 18, 1959 in the match of the second round of the Netherlands Cup against the amateur club Watergravesmer [1] [2] . In the first game, the striker scored a goal, which brought his team a victory with a score of 2: 1 [3] [4] . The following season, Johan played for the Ajax 2 back-up team.

In June 1960, Engelsma signed a contract with Alkmar '54 club from Alkmaar [5] . Later, two more Ajax reservists joined the team - John Fernhout and Andris van Loghem [6] . In the new team, Johan first entered the field on August 14 in a cup game with ZFK . The meeting ended with a score of 3: 2 in favor of the hosts, in which Jan Wisser and once Engelsma scored a double [7] .

He played his first game in the championship on September 25 at home against Rapida . In the first full season in the main part of the club, Johan spent twenty-seven matches, scoring five goals in them, including against the goal of Ajax [8] . At the end of the season, his team took the penultimate 17th place and was eliminated in the first division [9] . In the summer of 1961, at the request of the player himself, Engelsma was put up for transfer [10] , but he still remained in the team and played one season.

In July 1962, Johan joined the club RKH from Hemstead . According to the publication " De Telegraaf ", his transfer cost 15 thousand guilders [11] . In the tournament of the second division Engelsma made his debut on August 26 and immediately scored a goal in a winning match against PEK [12] . The 20-year-old center forward quickly became the main striking force of the “black and blue”, scoring in almost every match of the championship.

Two years later, Engelsma returned to Amsterdam and signed a contract with the De Wolewijkers club [13] . In the season 1964/65 he took the ninth place with the team in the championship of the first division. The following season, Johan became the team's top scorer, scoring Russian in the championship 17 goals [14] . In total, the forward played for the team for five seasons.

In the summer of 1969, Johan became a figure in the transfer conflict, in which his club and the Blau-Wit team also participated [15] [16] . As a result, the 27-year-old football player ended up in the Veloks from Utrecht [17] . Then he spoke for EDO from Haarlem [18] .

Netherlands national team

From the age of sixteen, Johan Engelsma played for the youth team, where his teammate Bob Vestra also played [19] [20] [21] . In February 1959, he was included in the application of the national team for the European Championship among juniors , which was to be held in Bulgaria [22] . At the tournament, Johan scored a goal in a match with the hosts of the tournament, the Bulgarians [23] [24] , but his team did not leave the group, taking only third place in it [25] .

In January 1960, Johan was again called up to the youth team, which was preparing under the leadership of Elek Schwartz for the European Championship among juniors [26] . In the first match of the tournament, held on April 16 in the Austrian Linz , the Netherlands defeated the Greeks with a minimum score of 0: 1. In three matches, Engelsma scored one goal, but his team again failed to leave the group.

In August 1961, he scored two goals for the Netherlands military team [27] .
