Tirumalaraya aravidu

Tirumalaraya Aravidu (? - 1578) - Maharajahiraj (king of kings) of the Vijayanagar empire in 1570-1572.

Biography

He came from the clan Aravida. During the reign of his brother, Ramaraya participated in most campaigns. In 1565, after the defeat of Ramaraya at Talikot and the further robbery of Vijayanagar Tirumalaray, having seized the state treasury and the nominal ruler Sadashivarayu, he retreated to Penugonda. This city has become the new capital of the empire.

Tirumalaya as a de facto ruler tried to restore the power of the state, however, he faced numerous uprisings of Nayaks (governors) who wished to become independent. At the same time, attacks continued from the sultans of Bijapur and Golconda. In 1567, the Vijayanagars defeated Bijapur's army. At the same time, Tirumalaya managed to temporarily defeat the Nayaks, but at the same time was forced to recognize their semi-autonomous status. In 1568, to successfully control the state, he made his brother Vekatapati I his co-ruler.

In 1570, he killed the nominal ruler Sadashivarayu, declaring himself a Maharajahiraj. However, due to age and illness, his reign did not last long. In 1572 he renounced power and spent the last years in seclusion. He died in 1578.
