Biography
Born in 1863 in Moscow in a family of Russified German philistines.
He received his primary education in a two-year real school at the Lutheran Church of St. Michael in Moscow (1879-1881).
In 1881-1883 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts as a free student, then - at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1884-1885) with E. S. Sorokin and V. E. Makovsky . In 1885-1887 he studied abroad at the Academy of Julien in Paris with William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Antoine Robert-Fleury .
Since 1887, Shtember took part in exhibitions at the Paris Salon, the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions , the Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi Society of Artists, the Moscow Society of Art Lovers , the St. Petersburg Society of Artists and others. He lived in Moscow, in the early 1890s he taught at his own drawing school, opened with L.O. Pasternak . In the mid-1910s, he created murals in the Marble Hall of the main house of the Serednikovo estate near Moscow.
In the years 1913-1914, Shtember arranged a personal exhibition in St. Petersburg . [1] Since 1917 he lived in Petrograd .
After the October Revolution he performed portraits of revolutionaries, party members; worked on portraits of V.I. Lenin. [2]
Since 1920, he lived in Nakhichevan-on-Don, where he died on January 11, 1921 .

Proceedings
The artistβs works are in several museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery , the State Russian Museum , the museums of Lipetsk , Nizhny Novgorod , as well as other art galleries and private collections.
