Biography

Berta Klinberg was born in Hamburg, but grew up with her grandparents in Butzow , the modern federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . Her love for nature was manifested in her from an early age. At the age of 14, she began to study the art of arranging bouquets in Rostock . After the death of her husband at the front of the First World War, the widowed Berthe Klingberg and her son moved to Schwerin. After the war, for decades she earned a living by selling flowers grown in her own garden at the Schwerin market. Berta Klingberg was always dressed in a traditional Renish costume, which contributed to her getting the status of a “city original” among the people. Schwerin affectionately called her "flower frau". In 1990, at the age of 91, she collected 17,000 signatures in Schwerin for the proclamation of her beloved city as the administrative center of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which ultimately happened (Schwerin was a rival to Rostock , the situation was connected with the reunification of Germany , before which Rostock and Schwerin were in the GDR ). For this activity, Berta Klingberg received in 1993 the first and so far the only honorable ring in history from the city of Schwerin. In 2002, the city council awarded her the title of honorary resident of the city. On November 7, 2005, Berta Klinberg died in a Schwerin nursing home at the age of 107.
