He studied medicine in Buenos Aires. In 1875 he continued his studies in Europe. Returning to Argentina, he became a professor of hygiene and ophthalmology. In 1879 he became chairman of the Argentine Medical Society.
In 1887 he was elected deputy of the National Congress of Argentina from his home province of Entre Rios . In the same year, President Miguel Juárez Selman appointed him Mayor of Buenos Aires. As mayor, he was actively involved in the construction of Avenida de Mayo and the Buenos Aires Zoo . In 1888, left the chair as mayor, being elected to the Argentine Senate . In honor of Antonio Crespo, the in Buenos Aires is named.
