Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer ( German: Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer , abbreviated AKK ; nee Kramp; born September 9, 1962 , Völklingen ) - German politician, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union . From August 2011 to February 2018, Kramp-Karrenbauer served as Prime Minister of the Saarland ; from June 2011, she was Chairman of the Land Branch of the Christian Democratic Union in Saarland . Since November 2010, she was a member of the CDU Presidium. From February 26 to December 7, 2018 she held the post of CDU Secretary General . On December 7, 2018, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was elected Chairman of the CDU . Since July 17, 2019 - Minister of Defense of Germany .

Biography

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer grew up in a conservative Catholic family and graduated from the Völklingen Gymnasium in 1982. Joined the CDU in 1981. Since 1984, she studied political sciences and law at the University of Trier and Saarland . After graduating from 1991-1998, she worked as a referent in the CDU of Saar and in 1999 as personal assistant to the chairman of the CDU in the Landtag and future Prime Minister Saar Peter Müller . In 2000-2007, Kramp-Karrenbauer served as Minister of the Interior, Family, Women's Rights and Sports in the Saar Government, and later Minister of Education, Family, Women's Rights and Culture. In 2009-2011, Kramp-Karrenbauer served as Minister of Labor, Family, Social Affairs, Prevention and Sports.

On January 22, 2011, Saar’s Prime Minister Peter Müller announced his resignation both from the post of head of government and from the post of chairman of the party’s land branch and proposed Kramp-Karrenbauer in his place. At the CDU congress on February 26, 2018 in Berlin, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was elected party secretary general and, in connection with the transfer to party work at the federal level, resigned from the post of Prime Minister Saar on February 28, 2018. On March 1, 2018, Tobias Hans became her successor in this position in Saarland.

In connection with the incident in the Kerch Strait, the CDU Secretary General Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer proposed to close the ports of Western countries for Russian ships from the Sea of Azov , while Russia blocks the entry of Ukrainian ships into it [5] .

After Angela Merkel refused in October 2018 to be re-elected as party chairman, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was elected as the new leader at the CDU Congress in Hamburg on December 7, 2018, defeating Frederick Merz in the second round, who received the support of 48.2% of delegates [6] .

On July 17, 2019, she received the portfolio of the Minister of Defense in the fourth government of Merkel after the election of Ursula von der Leyen to the post of President of the European Commission [7] .

Married to engineer Helmut Carrenbauer, has three children.
