Biography

Born in Crete in the village of Castelli (according to other sources in the village of Agios Nikolaos [2] ) in the family of Nicholas and Calliope [1] .

During his studies at the Halka Theological School , on March 28, 1954 he was ordained a deacon . In 1956 he graduated from the Khalka school with a master ’s degree in theology [1] , and on October 21, 1956, he was ordained a presbyter .

In 1956 he left for Belgium , where he studied at the Catholic University of Louvain and served in local Greek parishes [1] , which at that time belonged to the Thyatira Archbishopric .

Since 1960 he served in Germany in the parishes of Berlin and Nuremberg [1] . In 1963 he entered the clergy of the newly formed German Metropolis .

In July 1969, he arrived in the United States, where he transferred to the American Archbishopric of the Constantinople Patriarchate and was appointed parish priest of the Greek Church of St. Nicholas in ( Massachusetts ). At the same time, he continued his education at the Harvard School of Theology [1] .

In July 1971 he was appointed rector of the Holy Trinity Archbishop's Cathedral in New York, where he served until his election as bishop in 1977 [1] .

On April 17, 1977, he was ordained bishop of Christopol, Vicar of the American Archbishopric and appointed governor of the Sixth (Pittsburgh) District [3] .

March 15, 1979 was elected bishop of Boston [3] .

Since November 15, 1983 - Bishop of Denver [3] . On December 4 of that year, his intronization took place [4] .

In 1987, he retired due to a scandal.

October 15, 1992 appointed titular bishop of Olympic.

Bishop Anthimus was a close friend of Metropolitan Anthony of San Francisco, who was also a native of Crete. Bishop Afnfim was a frequent visitor to the San Francisco Metropolitanate. He loved attending the annual festival of folk dance and choral singing; was a big supporter of St. Nicholas’s ranch and the Center for the Restoration and Convent of the Virgin of the Life-Giving Spring in Dunlap, California [1] .

He died on May 29, 2015 at the age of 80 at his residence in West Yarmouth (Massachusetts) [1] .
