History
The Plaza Hotel was built in 1907-1909 by order of the entrepreneur Ernesto Tornquist and by the design of the German architect Alfred Zucker . The opening took place on June 15, 1909 . The ceremony was attended by Argentine officials and businessmen, including President Jose Figueroa Alcorta . The hotel quickly gained international recognition and was considered the first luxury hotel in South America . It had all the amenities rare for that era, in particular a telephone , Otis elevators , hot and cold water, dressing rooms , a roof garden, air mail , an escalator , and central heating . At the time of opening it had 160 ordinary rooms and 16 "suites".
The hotel was built on the site of a coal warehouse [2] . By that time, it was the tallest building in Buenos Aires and the only one that had more than 9 floors .
In 1913, the architects Hire and Molina Sweeti completed the entrance to the hotel, there is now the main entrance. In 1934, the Plaza was rebuilt, as a result of which it lost a significant amount of decoration of facades and rooms and acquired the appearance in the style of the then popular art deco . In 1942 and 1948 , two new hotel wings were completed, which significantly differed in style from the original building. In 1977 , a year before the World Cup in Argentina , the hotel was rebuilt again under the guidance of architects Clorinda Testa and Hector Lacarra to increase the number of seats in it to 325.
The rest of the hotel was redesigned in 1995 and 2003 .
The modern owner of the hotel is Marriott International in Buenos Aires, and therefore its original name Plaza was changed to Marriott Plaza. The hotel consists of 9 residential floors and one service, has 270 rooms and 48 rooms. The total area of more than 13500 m² [3] .
