Aeromancy

Aeromancy (from the Greek ἀήρ , air and μαντεία , divination) - fortune telling by “air” phenomena [1] - divination of the future “by the sky”, clouds, comets , meteors , by rainbow , by the halo around the moon, air currents and other atmospheric phenomena [2] [3] . Other names for such fortune-telling are arology, aerology or aerology [4] . There are narrower sections of aeromancy - austromancy (fortune telling by the wind), keranoscopy (observation of thunder and lightning), meteomancy (fortune telling by meteors and shooting stars) [3] .

The priests of Babylon were still engaged in aeromancy [3] , and in antiquity it was widespread [2] . Aristophanes mentions some methods of aeromantic fortune-telling in the comedy “Clouds” [1] . Aeromancy includes, for example, the prediction of the birth of Jesus by the Star of Bethlehem and the prediction of the victory of William in the Battle of Hastings after the appearance of Comet Halley [3] .

Aeromancy is condemned in the 18th chapter of the book of Deuteronomy [5] , which is included in the Bible and the Torah , and by Albert the Great in Speculum Astronomiae [6] , where it is described as a derivative of nigromancy [7] . In the ceremonial magic of the Renaissance, aeromancy was one of the "Seven Forbidden Arts", along with necromancy , geomancy , hydromancy , pyromancy , palmistry and [8] .
