Content
History
Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Abenaki Indians lived in this territory. The first white migrants appeared here in 1722 and initially fought cruel wars with the Indians. The Rochester Settlement was founded in 1749, incorporated in 1778, before the end of the US War of Independence. The first school was founded here in 1750, the first post office - in 1768. During the XIX century, the city grew steadily, there were many large workshops of various industries. In 1875, the first Rochester Fair was held, in 1891 the settlement received the status of a city (city), in 1893 a public library appeared in Rochester - the third in the country in a row, and in 1908 the Opera House was founded.
Geography
The area of the city is 118.6 km², of which 117.6 km² is land, 0.8 km² is in open water [1] . The maximum height above sea level is 177 m.
Population
According to the 2000 census, the population of the city was 28,461 people. The racial composition of the city, according to this census, was as follows: whites — 97.12%; African Americans — 0.52%; Native Americans — 0.22%; Asians — 0.87%; natives of Hawaii and Pacific Islands — 0.03 %, representatives of other races - 0.26%, representatives of two or more races - 0.98%, Latin Americans (of any race) - 0.9%. According to the 2010 census, 29,752 people lived in the city [2] .
