Biography
Graduate of the Cinematography Department of VGIK (1971, workshop of E. Smirnova). Candidate of Art History (1977).
Since 1974, he worked at the Research Institute of Theory and History of Cinema (NIIK), was the head of the sector of interdisciplinary research (since 1991). He taught at VGIK (since 1991) and at the Russian State Humanitarian University (since 1996) [1] . He established himself as a “wonderful teacher”, among his graduates there are specialists who “determine the face of modern cinematic science” [2] .
In 1988, he founded "One of the Most Serious Movie Magazines in the World" [2] "Cinema Notes " and led its publication as editor-in-chief. In 1995-1997 he also headed the editorial office of the magazine “Reading Room”. In 1994, he became Chairman of the Board of the Eisenstein Film Culture Research Center Foundation [1] , where he conducted active publishing activities (he prepared, in particular, the collected works of Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov ) [2] .
He was a recognized [2] specialist in Hungarian cinema , to whom he devoted several books. He actively published scientific and popular articles, which were published both in collections and in periodicals - in the magazines “The Art of Cinema ”, “ Cinema Notes”, “Screen”, “ Soviet Screen ”, “Screenplays”, newspapers “ Screen and Stage ”, " Literary newspaper " and other publications. He acted as the organizer and supervisor of retrospectives of the Moscow Museum of Cinema . He participated in many international film festivals and conferences [1] .
He died on April 24 (according to other sources - the 23rd [2] ) of 2008 [1] .
