History
Even under the Qin Empire, the Leyin County (漯 阴 县) was created on the southern ("Yin") bank of the Leishui River. In the era of the Southern and Northern Dynasties during the southern Song Dynasty in 455, Linyi County was created from the territory of Leyin County and part of the territory of Zhexian County (著 县).
In 1950, the Dezhou Special Area (德州 专区) of Shandong Province was formed, and the county became part of it. In 1956, the Dezhou Special District was disbanded, and the county became part of the Huimin Special Region (惠民 专区). In 1958, Jiyang County was attached to Linyi County, and Linyi County itself became part of the Liaocheng Special District (聊城 专区). In 1960, Linyi County was transferred to the Zibo Special District (淄博 专区).
In 1961, the Dezhou Special District was recreated, and Linyi County returned to it; at the same time, Jiyang County was again allocated from it. In 1967, the Dezhou Special District was renamed the Dezhou District (德州 地区).
By the Decree of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China of December 17, 1994, the city of Dezhou and the district of Dezhou were disbanded, and the city district of Dezhou was formed.
