National Historical Museum of Argentina

The museum was founded by Mayor of Buenos Aires Francisco Seeber on May 24, 1889 under the name Metropolitan History Museum ( Spanish: Museo Histórico de la Capital ). The first director of the museum, opened February 15, 1891, was Adolfo Carranza. Part of the museum’s collection was donations from the descendants of the heroes of the May Revolution and the war of independence , the remaining exhibits were donated by the People’s Museum. Since the museum’s exposition covered not only the history of the capital, it was decided to rename it to the National History Museum. In 1897, the museum moved from the municipal building, which now houses the Botanical Garden , to a state-owned building in the territory of Lesama Park , where it is located to this day. In 1997, the building on Defens Street, 1652, where the main exposition of the museum is located, was recognized as a national historical monument ^[1] .

The museum exhibits items related to outstanding events and personalities in the history of Argentina, before the period of the May Revolution and the War of Independence. It houses the belongings of Jose de San Martin , Manuel Belgrano , Bartolome Miter , paintings by Prilidiano Pueyrredona and Candido Lopez , old books and lithographs, religious paintings and sculptures, flags, ancient weapons and military uniforms, furniture, musical instruments, clothing and household items of Argentines past centuries. The National History Museum has 30 rooms and a library. The workforce is 33 people, the annual budget is 1.5 million Argentine pesos .
