Contents
The book was published in the Helsinki Botanical Museum of the at the University of Helsinki . The compilers of the book were Soili Stenroos , ( Teuvo Ahti ), Katiena Lohtander and Leena Myllys [1] [2] . The book was published in January 2011 in hardcover, with area maps and color photographs [3] .
The book contains 481 taxa ( species , subspecies and varieties ) - all known macrolichens in Finland ( leafy and bushy ), as well as the most common scale (cortical) [3] . The handbook has become the most comprehensive among all books published in Finland on the lichens of this country.
The introductory section of the book provides information on the morphology and reproduction of lichens, their chemical composition, taxonomy and ecology, as well as on the protection of endangered species [3] .
In addition, the book contains an overview of the history of lichenological studies in Finland [3] .
Descriptions are given for each genus and species (subspecies) of lichens, data on their distribution and ecological affinity are given, and the most common chemical reagents used in determining lichens using color reactions are indicated. For some taxa, their most well-known taxonomic synonyms are given , and protective status is indicated. If a genus contains several species, its description includes a dichotomous key for their definition. In addition, the book provides a common dichotomous key for identifying parmelium-like lichens. Each taxon in the book is illustrated with an area map and a color photo [3] .
The book contains indexes of scientific (Latin) , Finnish and Swedish taxon names, as well as a lichenological glossary [3] .

On November 3, 2011, six nominees for the Tieto-Finlandia Award were presented - Finland’s most prestigious prize in the field of scientific and popular science literature. Among the six nominees, in addition to “Suomen jäkäläopas”, there were books about sleeping problems in children, photographing birds in nature, and three works on historical themes - about sea battles in the Gulf of Finland in 1788-1790 during the Russian-Swedish war (“Wars of Gustav III ” in Finnish terminology), about the role of Lev Trotsky in Russian history and about the battles in Eastern Karelia in 1944 in the last days of the Soviet-Finnish war (“Continuation Wars”) [4] [5] . About the book “Suomen jäkäläopas” in the presentation of the nominees it was said that this book was designed in such a way that it would be useful both to the research scientist and to the ordinary person himself [5] .
On November 17, 2011, the Prize was announced to the book Suomen jäkäläopas. The final choice among the nominees in 2011 was made by , professor at the Academy Abo ( Turku , Finland). Justifying his choice of a lichen reference book, Ren said that this book has both high scientific and high aesthetic value. He noted the wonderful illustrations showing how beautiful the nature of Finland is, and also called the book timely, reminding us about how much interesting things you can see on our planet if you know exactly what to look for. In his opinion, this book is a gigantic scientific work, which contains comprehensive information about this type of plant [~ 1] , which he called “almost forgotten” [1] [2] .
Comments
- ↑ It is not entirely correct to speak of lichens as a “type of plant”, since they are symbiotic associations of fungi and microscopic green algae or cyanobacteria (occasionally at the same time they are both). According to modern concepts, lichens are considered not as a biological taxon , but as an ecological group; their classification and nomenclature are based on the mushroom component.
