In 1966 she defended her doctoral thesis "Questions of specific antenatal and postnatal prevention of rickets." She created the Ukrainian school for the study of calcium-phosphorus homeostasis and the systems of its regulation in different age periods of a child’s life in normal conditions and in pathology and related many clinical, biochemical and physiological disorders in children. She has identified complex mechanisms for the development of diseases, in the genesis of which there are diverse disorders of calcium-phosphorus metabolism, a new classification has been developed, and modern methods for the prevention and treatment of these diseases have been created. The important links of bone tissue metabolism disorders were clarified depending on the child's age, the type of somatic pathology, the influence of adverse environmental factors on the child's body, which became the basis for developing new, more effective methods of preventing and treating various bone diseases and hypocalcemic conditions in children. With the participation of Academician E. M. Lukyanova, a new drug, Videin-3, was created, which is widely introduced into the practice of protecting the health of children and pregnant women.
EM Lukyanova also created a scientific school of pediatric gastroenterology. She uncovered separate mechanisms for the formation of chronic diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, biliary tract and pancreas in children, developed effective schemes of pathogenetic therapy and their prevention. Created new products of medical nutrition for children with the pathology of the digestive system. Modern methods of endoscopic and ultrasound examination of the digestive organs in children have been developed and introduced into the practice of healthcare.
Under the guidance of Academician E. M. Lukyanova, unique studies of the effects of radiation exposure on the state of the biological system “mother-fetus-child” have been conducted, the characteristics of the occurrence of stochastic and non-stochastic effects in the organism of the future mother and her children have been studied. The researcher has developed diagnostic criteria and treatment-and-prophylactic complexes for children and women from radiation-controlled areas of Ukraine who have been exposed to acute or prolonged low-dose irradiation.
For many years she was the chief consultant of children's clinics and children's advisory clinic of the Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. E. M. Lukyanova is an outstanding pediatrician with experience of many years of practical work in a children's clinic. The profile of her medical care is extremely wide and includes, in particular, counseling for seriously ill children of all age groups with various diseases, managing complex medical consultation both at the institute and beyond.
