History

The building was built in 1860, surrounded by 14 hectares of garden in the English style - very popular in the 19th century. The garden was laid out by the famous Dutch landscape designer Leonardo Springer (1855-1940). The garden is covered by lawns well-groomed by the locals, many trees have been planted. Hiking trails lead through the park and is open to the public during the day.

The first mention of the building on the site of a modern house dates back to 1481, when a certain German ter Hevik married and presented his wife with a “rectangular manor Engeren” and a good amount of money.

In 1869, the old house was demolished and a new one was built, which stands now. The estate was rebuilt several times and updated, the current owner is the Rechteren-Limpurg-Spechfeld family ( Dutch: Rechteren-Limpurg-Speckfeld ). Now the estate hosts a variety of local exhibitions, concerts and other city events. The surrounding park is given the status of a natural monument.
