Biography

Ludwig Knaus was born on October 5, 1829 in the city of Wiesbaden [2] .

"World"

From 1846 to 1852 he studied at the Düsseldorf School of Art ( Düsseldorf Academy of Arts ) under the guidance of K. Zon and Shadov, spent a year in Italy and 8 years in Paris, during which he perfectly mastered the technique of the latest French painters and achieved the high skill recognized for by the French themselves.

At this time, his first works appeared, spreading and consolidating his fame in Germany and throughout Europe , namely: “Golden Wedding” (1858), “Christening” (1859) and “Morning after the festive mass in the village” [2] .

In 1860, he returned to his hometown, in 1861–66. worked in Berlin, then in Dusseldorf, and in 1874 he was called from there to the capital of Germany to become the head of the academic training workshop, which was under his control almost until his death [2] .

At the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries, on the pages of the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary , the Russian art critic A. I. Somov gave the following assessment of the artist’s creativity:

“ K. 's works testify to his subtle observation, the art of conveying the character and mental movement of people of all ages and states, the ability to create scenes full of life truth and imbued with good-natured humor, sometimes joyful joy, and deep feeling. The dignity of his paintings is exalted by excellent design, brilliant color and masterful writing [2] . ”

The field of his work is mainly the life of German peasants and, in general, the life of the lower class. Taking often to the stage children, young people and girls, he apparently relates to youth with heartfelt sympathy. Many of his paintings gained popularity due to their published reproductions in engraving, photo engraving and photography [2] .

Ludwig Knaus died on December 7, 1910 in Berlin.
