History
In the life of Theodore Studite , who lived in exile on the island of Halki in the years 809-811, the Despot Monastery (μονής των Δεσποτών) is mentioned. It is believed that it was this monastery that later became known as the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. Some identify this monastery with the Esoptru Monastery. In 860, the monastery was plundered by the Rus and decline came.
His rebirth is connected with the name of the patriarch of Constantinople Photius I. After the exile, Empress Theodosius , wife of Emperor Leo V Armenian, lived in the monastery. From the Byzantine past, there is still information that Queen Catherine Komnina adopted monasticism in 1063 with the name Ksenia.
After the fall of the Byzantine Empire, the monastery gradually fell into decay [1] .
The collection of the monastery library was laid in the XVI century thanks to the collection of the Patriarch of Constantinople Mitrofan III .
In 1844, during the repair of the monastery, many antiquities and funeral sculptures were found, which are believed to belong to the ancient temple of Apollo .
On October 1, 1844, through the efforts of Patriarch German IV , a theological school was opened at the monastery. Here, almost all the Patriarchs of Constantinople studied over the past century and a half and many hierarchs of other Local Orthodox Churches. For the entire time of its existence, about a thousand students graduated from the school. At the school, a unique library of 120 thousand volumes was collected, among which were valuable Byzantine manuscripts, and was the largest collection of the Greek world in the Ottoman Empire [2] .
In June 1894, during the earthquake, all the buildings of the Trinity Monastery and the seminary, with the exception of the church of the 17th century, were destroyed. The restoration of the complex was carried out by the architect Periklis Fotiadis ( Greek. Περικλής Φωτιάδης ).
In 1971, supporters of the Republican People’s Party in order to close the school, appealed to the highest authority - the Constitutional Court, which, on the basis of Articles 130 and 132 of the Turkish Constitution , decided to close the seminary due to the ban on private religious educational activities [3] .
On January 10, 2013, the Council of the General Administration of Vacufs of Turkey in Ankara decided to return to the Trinity Monastery forest land with an area of 190 swaths [4] .
