History

During the war of independence of 1954-1962 , Algeria received military-technical and material assistance from the USSR. The Soviet Union became the first state in the world to establish diplomatic relations with Algeria on March 23, 1962 , and 4 months before its official declaration of independence on July 5 .

The Soviet Union sent to Algeria numerous engineers and technicians who rebuilt the Algerian infrastructure and played a huge role in the economic development of this country. In turn, thousands of Algerian students studied at the universities of the USSR. The collapse of the Soviet Union led to the collapse of many ambitious construction projects.

Economic Cooperation

The trade turnover between Russia and Algeria in 2005 amounted to 365 million US dollars , with 361 million accounted for Russian exports. Russia supplies grain , metal , pipes, and engineering products to Algeria.

Since 2000, Russia has played a prominent role in the development of the fuel and energy complex of Algeria. In particular, in 2003, the Haud el-Hamra- Arzev gas pipeline was launched, built by the Russian company Stroytransgaz . In 2001, Rosneft began developing the Algerian Illizi oil and gas field. In 2005, the construction of the Suger-Hajeret Annus gas pipeline began. In 2006, Stroytransgaz began the reconstruction of the Uled Jellal - Skikda gas pipeline.

Military-technical cooperation

In March 2006, Russia signed a contract with Algeria for the supply of military equipment worth $ 7.5 billion in exchange for writing off Algerian debt. In total, according to the contract, Russia was supposed to deliver to Algeria 36 MiG-29SMT fighters, 28 Su-30 fighters, 14 combat-training Yak-130 fighters, 8 S -300 air defense divisions, the Metis and Kornet anti-tank systems, 300 T- tanks 90 .

Agreements were also signed on the modernization of 36 MiG-29 aircraft purchased in the 1990s by Algeria from Belarus and Ukraine , as well as 250 T-72 tanks.

In November 2002, Russia launched the Algerian satellite ALSAT-1 into orbit.
