White-Yellow-Black Flag

One of the projects of the national flag of Novorossia (white-yellow-black) is a cloth with three horizontal stripes of equal width: white on top, yellow (gold) in the middle and black below ^[3] .

The colors of the flag resemble the Emblem flag of the Russian Empire , which was also considered the "dynastic" flag of the Romanovs . According to the developers, this circumstance connects the white-yellow-black flag precisely with Novorossia, since the creation and development of the Novorossiysk province is connected precisely with the era of the Romanov dynasty.

In addition to the official interpretation of the colors of the flag, the Symbolism Commission proposed introducing an unofficial interpretation: white - the purity of ideas and thoughts, yellow - the golden fields of the Luhansk region, black - the mines of Donbass ^[4] .

Armed Forces Flag

On August 13, 2014, along with the national flag, the commission for the symbolism of New Russia presented the Flag of the Armed Forces (“Military Flag”) of New Russia - a red cloth with St. Andrew’s cross overlaid on a blue and white background. As its creators emphasized, it combines the red banner of the Great Victory and the flag of the Russian Navy. In addition, flags of red, dark red and raspberry colors were used by Zaporozhye Cossacks . Blue St. Andrew’s cross on a white background is the flag of the Russian Navy. The Black Sea Fleet has become an integral part of the creation and further history of New Russia ^[4] .

On August 22, 2014, the parliament of Novorossia approved the image of this “combat banner” ^[2] .

During the accession of Crimea to Russia, participants in reconstruction forums and national-patriotic groups on social networks began to propose symbolic designs for the southeastern lands of Ukraine. Most often, flags of the following design were offered.

• yellow-white-azure (horizontal arrangement) with an overlaid image of the coat of arms of New Russia ^{[6] [7]} ;
• variants of the previous one with the same emblem: azure-white-yellow ^[8] ; white-azure yellow (rarely); yellow-blue-red; blue-yellow-red (the last two - like the flags of the "Zaporizhzhya Republic" ^[7] ).
• St. Andrew's cross with a white edging on a red background ^[9] ; possibly, it is based on the design of the flag of the Nashi movement, which was used in one of the first publications with reference to the term Novorossiya ^[10] .

During the unrest in the Russian-speaking regions of Ukraine, the USSR flag, the Russian flag and the flag of St. George’s ribbon colors were unofficially used.

In mid-May 2014, the “People’s Governor” of Donbass Pavel Gubarev announced a vote for the projects of the new flag of Novorossia ^[11] , 11 options of the flag were presented on the Novorossia information and analytical portal ^[12] .

On May 24, 2014, at the Congress of People’s Representatives in Donetsk, the flag and fortress flag of Russia were used as the flag of New Russia ^[13]

On May 31, 2014, a design was chosen for the official flag of Novorossia ^[14] - a scarlet rectangular cloth with a St. Andrew’s cross with a silver border - a modified flag of the Russian fleet , which played a prominent military role in the emergence and approval of historical New Russia ^[15] . It is this flag that is actively used in the territory of Novorossiya, is the official symbol of the "party of Novorossia" ^{[16] [17] [18] [19] [20]} .

On August 13, 2014, the speaker of the Parliament of the Union of Peoples Republics Oleg Tsarev introduced the new flag of New Russia. “The republic was created on the lands that were part of the Russian Empire when tsarist Russia existed, and people went to a referendum for the right to be annexed to the Russian world. For this reason, the commission settled on an option that is associated with the flag of the Russian Empire, ”Tsarev explained the choice of the state symbol ^[21] . This flag, however, is much less popular than the "battle flag of New Russia" ^[22] .

A similar flag is the Confederate States of America, which in addition to the blue stripes are also present stars. A similar element is present on the flag of the state of Mississippi , USA ^[23] . The flag of the Russian Border Guard has a similar flag; it differs only in color ^[24] .

• Oleg Tsarev introduced the new flag of New Russia
