From the nobles of the Pskov province . In May 1761 he entered the service of the cadet in the Marine Corps. Midshipman (1764), midshipman (1766). He sailed in the Baltic and in Livorno (1764-1765). In 1767, sailed on the Volga at the gallery "Kazan". In the years 1769-1770 on the ship "Svyatoslav" took part in an expedition to the Archipelago ( Aegean Sea ) as part of Rear Admiral Elphinston's squadron. He distinguished himself in battles with the Turkish fleet at Napoli di Romagna and at Chesma (1770). He was promoted to lieutenant of the fleet (April 1770). In 1771, on the ship " Three hierarchs " distinguished himself in hostilities at Negropont and Metelino. In 1772, he commanded the Saturn kick in the Archipelago. In 1773 - again on the ship "Three Hierarchs" participated in the attack of the Turkish fortresses of Budrum and Stancho.
In 1775 he returned to the Baltic. Fleet lieutenant commander (August 1775). In 1776-1777 he commanded the yacht Catherine and the ship Chesma. In 1780-1781, he commanded the Anna transport and the Glory frigate. He was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank (January 1782). In 1782-1784 he successfully commanded the battleship Svyatoslav in the squadron of Admiral Chichagov, on which he sailed from Kronstadt to Livorno and vice versa. It is made for distinction in captains of the 1st rank (January 1784). For 18 naval campaigns he was awarded the Order of St. George of the 4th class (1784). In 1784 he was sent to Astrakhan , where he took command of the Caspian Flotilla (until 1791). During the command of the flotilla, he was twice promoted - as captain of the brigadier rank (April 14, 1789) and captain of a major general rank (July 6, 1790). In 1791 he was transferred to the service back to the Baltic Fleet. He was promoted to rear admiral (December 18, 1796).
On January 29, 1799 he was dismissed from active maritime service with half salary and the right to wear his uniform.
