Umeå University Hospital

Hospital in 2006.

Umeå University Hospital is the main hospital in northern Sweden , located in Umeå . The hospital employs 5,600 people [1] .

General Information

The hospital is the largest healthcare facility in northern Sweden and one of the largest in the country. Its three main areas of activity are the provision of qualified medical care, research and teaching. The hospital works closely with Umeå University and is the center of medical research in northern Sweden. The training of doctors is the main focus of activities designed to satisfy the need for doctors in the region. The hospital is the responsible body of the university’s medical faculty, which has 13 departments and 11 academic programs. The faculty has about 2860 students and 450 graduate students and about 1020 employees, including about 500 teachers and researchers.

There is a helipad on the roof of the hospital, capable of receiving helicopter patients from the entire region with serious injuries or illnesses for quick treatment and intensive care. Air ambulance districts are stationed in Lycksele.

The hospital is central to the entire Norr region. It includes the West Norrland, Jämtland, Västerbotten and Norrbotten fiefs. The total population of these regions is about 900,000 people (in 2010), the area is more than half of the entire country.

On January 22, 2014, the hospital was recognized as the best educational hospital in Sweden in 2013 [2] [3] .

History

The hospital was founded as an infirmary in 1784 and soon became known as the Yellow House (Gula huset) on Storgatan Street, 28, in Umeå. There were eight beds: four wards with two beds in each, as well as two cells for the temporary maintenance of violent mentally ill persons [4] . The building still exists, but is no longer used as a hospital [5] .

As Umeå expanded on Olidbaken, a new hospital was built in the center of Umeå. It was opened in 1907 (celebrated its centenary in 2007) and was designed for 134 beds [5] , 20 of which were intended for people with mental illness.

In 1918, the hospital was significantly expanded. In 1926, the construction of an eye clinic was completed, in 1937 a new department of pediatrics was opened, and a department of otolaryngology later appeared; in 1955, the gynecological and obstetric departments were added, and in 1957 the plastic surgery clinic [5] . With the expansion of the number of units in the hospital, the number of available beds for patients also increased.

Now all the original buildings on Olidbaken are demolished and replaced by the existing hospital [5] .

In 2011, the Provincial Council (Lena) Västerbotten banned photographing in health care facilities, citing the need to protect the privacy of patients and staff. The ban, however, does not apply to the hospital, but includes all the premises of the provincial council [6] [7] . The ban was met with protests, including from Swedish television, TV4 and Vasterbottens-Kuriren [8] .
