Biography

  • In 1959 he visited the American exhibition in Moscow, in Sokolniki (American National Exhibition “Industrial Products of the USA” [1] . Here, 16-year-old Leonid, for his first time, got acquainted with abstract art, in particular, with Mark Rothko ’s painting 1956 “ Old gold over white . " [2]
  • In 1968, Borisov graduated from the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute of Communications (LETIS) .
  • In 1971, Leonid met Alexander Leonov , one of the leaders of the Gazanevschina in Leningrad; in 1975 Leonov proposed to participate in the exhibition "Painting, Sculpture and Graphics" in the Palace of Culture "Nevsky" [3] ; it was the creative debut of Leonid Borisov.

Since childhood, he had a penchant for drawing, went to school in the art studio. In the last year of the institute I met Leonov (he was the husband of the sister of one of my classmate), who studied at the Academy of Arts and was engaged in art that did not correspond to socialist realism. For this, he was later expelled from the Academy. Since he was focused on modern schools, I was interested in talking with him, watching what he was doing. He made drawings in the style of Filonov, I also began to draw in the same style. The essence of the method was that some topic was taken and developed in detail.

  • In 1974, in Moscow, Borisov witnessed the “ Bulldozer Exhibition ” (September 15) and visited September 29 “Open Air” (“Second Autumn Viewing of Pictures in the Open Air”) in Izmailovsky Forest Park . I met with Moscow nonconformist painters Oscar Rabin , Lev Kropyvnytsky , Vladimir Nemukhin , Dmitry Plavinsky , Sergei Bordachev , Vyacheslav Kalinin .
  • In 1978, the first solo exhibition of Leonid Borisov was held at the Krupskaya Palace of Culture in Leningrad.
  • In 1987, Borisov became a member of TEII ( Partnership of Experimental Fine Arts ).
  • In 1991 he participated in the exhibition "Contemporary Artists Malevich" in the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow).
  • In 2005, the artist’s work was included in the permanent exhibition of the “Art of the 20th Century” section of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

The basis of all art is a formal idea. There is no creation without an idea. According to Kandinsky, the three whales of the picture are composition, improvisation, expression. The basis is a composition, in fact, an idea. Aids are improvisation and expression. I rely on these principles in my work. The first is an idea. Then - the form in which this idea should be put on, and the better the outfit, the better the idea sounds, and the more accessible the picture.

Notes

  1. ↑ Nikita Khrushchev, who visited this exhibition, spoke with Jackson Pollock about the painting “The Boy Pissed!” And promised to catch up with and overtake America, as well as “ show Kuzma’s mother .”
  2. ↑ Now Rothko ’s painting “Old Gold over White” ( “Old Gold over White”, an archived copy of September 4, 2014 on the Wayback Machine ) is stored in English. Neuberger Museum of Art , New York.
  3. ↑ As soon as the artist Alexander Petrovich Leonov played such a significant role in the fate of Borisov, we quote from the recollections of the early years of Leonov’s work with his words:

    - It’s best to start with the fact that I’m the artist’s son and my childhood passed among the Suprematist paintings, my father P.V. Leonov , the main artist of the Dulevo plant . Then I studied at the Secondary School , then the Academy . Then I had to get rid of these academic skills. - Did you graduate from the academy?

    - No, I was expelled for formalism from the second year. This very upset my relatives, but I was glad. Since 1959, I was already emerging as an artist with my own style of writing. In 1961, I made several drawings that revealed themselves to me as an artist.

To give balance to the simplest construction, <...> two planks and air - and the thing works, lives, breathes. This is a great gift.

  6. ↑ Hans-Peter Rize in the catalog of the exhibition Nonconformists. The Second Russian Avant-Garde ”(1996), p.92, mistakenly believes that Borisov was an engineer by the time he visited the American exhibition in Sokolniki. In the same place, nonconformist artist Alexander Leonov (born 1932, emigrated to France in 1977) was mistakenly called the “Leontiev”.
