Numerous Native American tribes have long lived on the territory of modern West Memphis, appreciating the fertile shores of the Mississippi. In 1884, the city of West Memphis was founded here. In 1892, a railway bridge over the Mississippi was built near the city. The first automobile bridge in this region was opened in 1917. In 1927, West Memphis with approximately 500 residents received the status of a city with local government. The first mayor of the city was elected Zack Bragg ( Zack Bragg ). Soon, it became the largest settlement in Crittenden County.

Transport

The city is located on the right bank of the Mississippi River.

Connected routes US 70 and US 79 pass through the city center. I-40 passes through the northern half of West Memphis in the west, connected to US 63 , and in the east - from US 64 , through the eastern - I-55 , connected to US 61 . For 5 kilometers, these west-east and north-south highways are connected in the city center.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, there were 26,245 people living in West Memphis. In 2000, this figure was 27,674 people.

The racial composition of the city in 2010 was distributed as follows: representatives of the white race 34.37%, African Americans 63.51%, Native Americans 0.20%, Mongoloids 0.39%, representatives of two or more races 0.96%, Hispanics race 1.60%.
