History
When there were no bridges in Umea, residents crossed the river using an ice road in winter and a ferry in other seasons [1] .
During the second Russian occupation of Umea during the Russo-Swedish war in 1809, soldiers built a floating bridge made of logs across the river. However, shortly afterwards, it was destroyed by the spring flood [2] .
It was considered too expensive to build a bridge across the Umeelven River for a long time, but Governor Gustav Munte became interested in this issue when he took office in 1856. He ordered to study in which place the construction of the bridge would be most suitable in order to prepare project proposals and calculate how much it would cost to build. Survey work showed that in the immediate vicinity of the destroyed bridge, upstream of the river, its bottom was most suitable for the construction of the bridge. The estimated cost of the construction project is estimated to be 65,450 kroons. With additional costs, the total cost was 86,000 kroons [2] .
The bridge was opened in 1863, and for a long time people had to pay money for the right to use it. A decade after the construction, the original wooden coating of the bridge was repaired, and in 1894-1895 it was replaced by steel, after which the bridge got the look that it has to date.
Bridge today
Now the bridge is open only for pedestrians and cyclists [3] . In 2013, bridge wear was noted, calls for reconstruction began [4] .
