Bloomsbury Group

Virginia Wolf and Lytton Streychi

Bloomsbury Group (aka Bloomsbury Group ) is an elite group of English intellectuals, writers and artists, Cambridge graduates, united by complex family, friendly, creative relationships.

The core of the group began in 1905-1906 to regularly assemble in the house of the Stephen family in Gordon Square in the Bloomsbury district of London . The head of the family, Sir Leslie Stephen, died in 1904. Immediately after this, the Stephen family moved from the expensive respectable Kensington to the cheap bohemian Bloomsbury area.

The circle included modernist writers W. Wolfe (daughter of L. Stephen), her friend Vita Sackville-West , Lytton Streychi , E.M. Forster , D. Garnett , artists Dora Carrington and Duncan Grant , art historians C. Bell and R. Fry , economist John Maynard Keynes , orientalist Arthur Whaley , philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell , etc.

The views of the Bloomsbury men, influential in the 1910-1930s and having survived a kind of rebirth in the 1960s, opposed the Victorian hypocrisy, they defended the principles of artistic search, independence in life and in art. Members of the group demonstrated a commitment to friendship, communication, and art.
