Spread

Central Asia , Kyrgyzstan , mountain areas: Tien-Shan, Pamir-Alay. They are encountered at altitudes of about 2 km [1] .

Description

Small reddish-brown ants about 5 mm long with long prickles of metathorax. Antennae 12-segmented (in males 13-segmented). The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of two segments: the petiolus and the postpetiolus (the latter is clearly separated from the abdomen), the sting is developed, the pupae are bare (without cocoon ). The belly is smooth and shiny. Anthills are located underground. Inhabit the mountain meadows and riversides [1] [2] .

Systematics

It is close to the sympatric species Myrmica juglandeti from the species group Myrmica dshungarica -group, differing from them in underdeveloped grooves around the antennal cavities (sometimes they are completely absent) [1] . The taxon was first described in 1926 by the Italian mirmecologist and teacher Bruno Finzi (Bruno Finzi, 1897–1941) under the original name of Myrmica laevinodis var. ferganensis Finzi, 1926 . The status of a separate species was obtained in 1976 (Arnoldi 1976) [3] , then synonymous with Myrmica rubra , but in 1994 again became a species [4] . The species name M. ferganensis is derived from the name of the place of detection of the type series (Fergana) [1] [5] .
