Content
History
European immigrants from Scotland, Ireland and Germany first began to settle on the territory of modern Statesville around 1753. They called their first settlement here the “Congregation of the Fourth Creek” - the fourth creek flowed here west of the city of Salisbury .
In January 1789, the city of Statesville was founded, becoming the administrative center of Ayrdell County, formed a year earlier. The origin of the name is not documented.
In 1847, Statesville received the status of a city with local government. In 1858, it was connected to Asheville and Charlotte by railway lines. During the Civil War, many rails were destroyed, which temporarily hindered the development of the city, shortly after the war, however, which became the largest center for tobacco production in North Carolina. Statesville also became one of the world leaders in the distribution of medicinal herbs, whiskey production occupied an important place in the industry of the city.
The Fort Dobbs State Historic Site is the city’s only North Carolina Franco-Indian War monument.
Transport
The city is located at the intersection of two major interstate highways - West-East I-40 and North-South I-77 , as well as three other roads - US 21 , US 64 and US 70 .
A few kilometers southwest, at US 70, is the Statesville Municipal Airport.
Demographics
According to the 2010 census, there were 24,532 people living in Statesville. In 2000, this figure was 23,390 people.
The racial makeup of the city in 2010 was as follows: white Americans 54.77%, African Americans 34.53%, Native Americans 0.31%, Mongoloids 1.88%, representatives of two or more races 2.43%, Hispanics of any race 10.86%.
