Cultural Activities

Artyom Verigo-Dorevsky devoted a lot of time and energy to cultural and educational activities. In the 1850s he organized a public library in Vitebsk. Collected Belarusian folklore. He sent notes to the newspaper Kurier Wileński (Vilensky Vestnik) ( Vilno ), Słowo ( Petersburg ), the magazine Ruch muzyczny ( Warsaw ).

He became known as the author of poems, conversations and dramatic works that diverged in manuscripts: the poem "Akhulgo" (thematically related to the struggle of the mountaineers under the leadership of Shamil), the drama "Pride", the comedies "Greed" and "Sin 4th - anger." He was the first to translate the poem by A. Mickiewicz “ Konrad Wallenrod ” into Belarusian [2] [3] . Due to censorship conditions, Belarusian works were not printed, manuscripts were not found [2] . During his life in 1858, the only book in Polish called “A Conversation about a Relative” was published under the pseudonym Belarus Duda ( Polish: Białoruska Duda ).

The public resonance was the trip of A. Verigo-Dorevsky in 1858 to Vilno, where he met with well-known representatives of culture. Then the famous “Verigo-Dorevsky Album” (1858–1863) was formed, which he instituted during his trip from Vitebsk to Vilno, and became a kind of literary and public almanac, where, among others, V. Syrokomlya , V. Korotynsky , A left their notes Kirkor , V. Dunin-Martinkevich , A. Rypinsky , E. P. Wool [2] .

The author of the rhymed improvisation “To the Litvins who recorded in my Album as a keepsake” (a copy was preserved) [2] .

The assumption expressed in the scientific literature that A. Verigo-Dorevsky is the author of the poem “ Taras on Parnassus ” has not been confirmed by research [2] .
