Kakhiani, Joseph Georgievich

Joseph G. Kakhiani (1921-1992) - Soviet mountaineer, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1961), Honored Trainer of the RSFSR (1967), multiple winner and medalist of the USSR Mountaineering Championships , one of the organizers of the mountain rescue service in Elbrus region [1] .

Biography

Joseph Kakhiani was born on February 16, 1921 in Upper Svaneti , in the village of Adishi, Mestia region of Georgia (at that time - the Georgian Democratic Republic ) - his mother’s native village [3] . According to other sources - he was born in Mulakhi near Mestia [1] . The community of Mulakhi includes the village of Zhabeshi [4] , where his father lived. According to Kakhiani himself, he was transferred across the pass from Adisha to Zhabeshi at the age of three months [3] .

According to Kakhiani, for the first time he participated in rescue operations in the mountains in 1935, when he was 14 years old - he was taken with him by Goji Zurebiani (in the future - USSR champion and Honored Master of Sports of the USSR). They transported the bodies of Ukrainian climbers who fell off the crest [3] .

The Svan name of Kahiani is Ermile, he was “renamed” to Joseph when he studied at the College of Physical Culture in Tbilisi before the war [5] .

In 1941-1945 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War , the Guard, a senior sergeant was a platoon commander. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War , the medal "For Courage" and others [1] .

In the 1950s and 1960s, he participated in many high-altitude and technical ascents in the Caucasus and the Pamirs , won the USSR mountain climbing championship three times, and was also a silver and bronze medalist [6] . On many ascents, his partner was another famous climber from Svaneti - Mikhail Khergiani . In particular, in 1957, they in a deuce went a difficult and dangerous route along the northwestern wall of Donguzorun Mountain [7] .

For a long time he worked in Elbrus region as the head of the rescue service located in the Cheget hotel.

Joseph Kahiani died in 1992 in Mulahi [8] .

  • 1955 - 01!   1st place (high-altitude class), the first ascent of the route to the peak of Communism from the Garmo Glacier, the head of the team of the Georgian Mountaineering Club, which included Levan Akhvlediani , Jumber Medzmariashvili and Mikhail Khergiani .
  • 1957 - 03!   3rd place (technical class), the first ascent of the route to Mount Donguzorun along the northwest wall, in a deuce with Mikhail Khergiani (Spartak).
  • 1958 - 03!   3rd place (technical class), the first ascent of the route to the central peak of Tyutyubashi along the northern wall, the head of the Spartak team, which included Igor Polevoi, Shakir Tenishev , Mikhail Khergiani, Shalva Margiani and Mikhail Khergiani Jr.
  • 1959 - 01!   1st place (high-altitude class), first ascent to Voroshilov peak (now Akhmadi Donish peak), in a group led by Vitaly Abalakov , which also included Yakov Arkin , German Agranovsky, Peter Budanov , Nikolai Gusak , Gennady Ilyinsky, Vladimir Kizel , Konstantin Kletsko , Ivan Lapsenkov and Leo Filimonov .
  • 1960 - 02!   2nd place (high-altitude class), the first ascent of the route to Lenin Peak from the north, in a group led by Yakov Arkin , which also included Vladimir Kizel, Lev Filimonov and German Agranovsky.
  • 1962 - 02!   2nd place (technical class), climbing the Shchurovsky peak along the northern wall, in the team of Kabardino-Balkaria under the leadership of Mikhail Khergiani , which also included Heliy Stepanov , Abu Amshokov, Mikhail Zalikhanov and Victor Naugolny.
  • 1966 - 01!   1st place (high-tech class), the first ascent of the route to the peak of Tajikistan along the eastern wall, the head of the team of Kabardino-Balkaria, which included Mikhail Zalikhanov, Ali Kerimov, Victor Naugolny, Yuri Porokhnia, Heliy Stepanov, Sergey Shatsky and Stanislav Shvedov.

Memory

Kakhiani's name is the peak of Joseph Kakhiani in the mountain node Donguzorun-Cheget-Karabashi in the Caucasus, height 3367 m [2] .
