History

At the end of the 19th century, Swire Trading House acquired land in the Quarry Bay area on which to build a large Taikoo Sugar sugar factory. At the beginning of the 20th century, construction of Taikoo Dockyard shipyards began in the neighborhood (the first ship was launched in 1910). Along with another Hong Kong company, Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock, Taikoo Dockyard built the world's largest ships of the era. Taikoo Dockyard was closed in 1972, and Hong Kong United Dockyard was established in 1973, which included Taikoo Dockyard and Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock (a joint venture between Hutchison Whampoa and Swire Group ). In the late 1970s, the old shipyards were moved to the island of Chinji , and the construction of a large residential area for the middle class began on the liberated territory [2] [3] [4] .
