Biography

Before the start of his competitive career, Lawrence Toms worked as a ski instructor in New Zealand . Later, he met a Swiss businessman who lived in Fiji. He created the Fiji Ski Federation and sponsored Toms performances at international competitions.

For the first time he performed at competitions under the auspices of the FIS in 2000 at the stage of the Far Eastern Cup in Yonpyeong . At these competitions, he twice completed the performances in giant slalom and once in slalom. Later, Toms performed at competitions in New Zealand, Germany and Switzerland, gaining points needed to qualify for the 2002 Olympics .

Ultimately, the Fijian effort brought him the opportunity to perform at the Games. He became the first representative of the Pacific region, who made his way to the Winter Games on a sporting basis, and not by a special invitation.

At the Olympics was the only member of the team and its standard-bearer. In Park City, Toms performed in slalom and giant slalom. In the slalom, he was unable to complete the competition, having left the track in the first attempt, and in the giant slalom he performed more successfully, taking the final 55th place, losing to the winning Stefan Eberharter about 18 seconds and ahead of athletes from Hungary and San Marino.
