Biography

The representative of the noble family Markevich . In 1888, the family moved to Poland , where he studied at the 1st Warsaw Male Gymnasium, received a special education at the Prague Arms School, for the successful completion of which in 1902 was awarded an excursion around the arms centers of Europe. In Prague, he entered the Forest Institute, but due to lack of funds he was forced to leave the third year, after which he returned to the Caucasus .

From 1904 he became a volunteer in the Dagestan Equestrian Regiment , which included the Russian-Japanese war . For military merit was awarded the Cross of St. George . After the war, he left for China , where he worked at an arms factory . In 1906, he returned to the Caucasus, served in forestry, and then as a weapon technician in the Tiflis arms arsenal.

The participant of the First World War, fought on the Caucasian front . In 1920 he graduated from two-year special courses, received the title of military engineer in small arms.

In February 1921, V.Ye. Markevich voluntarily joined the Red Army, served in the Armory Arsenal, and later in the Artmekhzavod. He served as military representative at the Tula and Izhevsk arms factories .

He worked on the improvement of weapons, made a number of changes to military rifles . After successful tests, he was called to GAU in Moscow and then supervised the experiments at the Scientific Test Arms-Weapon Test Range (NIROP), tested the latest domestic and foreign systems of automatic rifles, pistols and machine guns (from 1927 to 1935).

From 1935 - Head of the small arms department of the Artillery Museum in Leningrad. He was a consultant and an expert on weapons and ammunition in the department of military inventions of the NKO USSR , the NKVD and the military prosecutor's office.

At the same time he was engaged in literary activity, published articles on weapon topics in hunting magazines: “Hunting and Sports of the Transcaucasus”, “Ukrainian Hunter and Fisher”, “Ural Hunter”, “Hunter and Fur of Siberia”, “Okhotnik” (Moscow), etc., as well as for the Soviet Military Encyclopedia .

Known as the author of books:

  • "Handguns" (in 3 volumes, 1937-1956),
  • "Hunting ammunition" (M., 1947),
  • "The durability of a hunting rifle" (M., 1956),
  • “Hunting and sporting small arms” (St. Petersburg, 1996).

He was buried in St. Petersburg at the Georgievsky (Okhtinsky) military cemetery .
